Make small changes that add up with our Reduce Your Foodprint Challenge

I’m sure we’re not the only ones to notice that the world feels a little heavy right now. Global wars, political division here at home, climate chaos, financial stress … When the world feels heavy or uncertain, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed, and like nothing we do personally can make a difference.

On a subreddit called Sustainable, a member recently posted, “Do you think individual behaviour change still matters, or is systemic change the only thing that really moves the needle?” The replies overwhelmingly called for “both” — a blend of personal and systemic change.

Someone we recently spoke to at the farmers’ market about whether reducing food waste at home makes a difference echoed this same sentiment: “Everything matters all the time.” Yes, Marjorie, we agree! Yes, systemic change is needed, but so are individual changes that add up collectively. Let’s all individually eat less meat, save our scraps, bring our reusable water bottle and grocery bags. And collectively call our political reps, protest, vote. As writer Jason Mark put it, “Living in accord with one’s political vision is a way of laying the foundations for the world we want to see.”

In the spirit of “everything matters all the time,” we’re relaunching our annual Reduce Your Foodprint Challenge — a monthlong plan to help you adopt more sustainable shopping, cooking and eating practices. And in this season of renewal, it’s the perfect moment to recommit to reducing your foodprint. You won’t need to overhaul everything overnight either: Small, meaningful daily actions can add up to real impact. From creating less food waste and trash, to using less plastic and single-use packaging, to supporting a food system that empowers farmworkers and communities, every action adds up to make a difference.

Want to amplify your impact? Invite a friend! You’ll deepen your connection through working toward a shared goal and you’ll make even bigger strides improving your foodprint together.

Every week will have a new theme, starting with easy changes such as eating delicious but typically overlooked scraps (carrot-top pesto, anyone?) and bringing a reusable cup to the coffee shop. You’ll progress to longer-term commitments, like eating less meat and even growing your own food. These achievable daily actions are designed to help you reduce your foodprint, guiding you through making better choices for animals, people and the environment.
